Brain damage during childbirth

Serious birth injuries occur in approximately three percent of births. Complications during pregnancy, labor and/or delivery can result in various issues for a newborn baby. These complications are referred to as birth injuries, the most serious of which include:

  • brain damage
  • traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • cerebral palsy
  • erb's palsy

The severity of these injuries varies greatly, and sometimes results in the death of an infant. Newborn brain injuries are caused by oxygen deprivation or bleeding inside the brain from trauma during pregnancy, labor or delivery. Many birth injuries are the result of induced or C-Section deliveries.

In many circumstances, brain damage or injuries are caused by mistakes made by doctors, hospitals or other medical professionals during the delivery process, such as:

  • delay in performing a necessary C-section delivery
  • VBAC (vaginal birth after C-Section) delivery complication (e.g., uterine rupture)
  • use of excessive force during the delivery
  • misuse of a vacuum extractor or forceps
  • miscalculation in the size of the baby, causing a traumatic delivery
